A free history day by the Creek

Medieval & Tudor Faversham is a free one-day event run by Faversham Town Council. This year it's on Sunday 27 September from 10am to 3pm, mainly on Front Brents Green and the Town Quay, next to Faversham Creek. The council's listing also mentions Market Place.

Last year the event was held in the town centre, so if you went in 2025, head down to the Creek this time. Expect re-enactors, combat displays, crafts, live music, food and drink and market stalls, with plenty aimed at children.

What's on during the day

  • Henry VIII. The King holds an "Audience with the King" with lawn games, questions and photos at 11am, 12pm and 1pm on the green next to the Albion Taverna.
  • Ladies of the Tudor Court talk about court life, manners and fashion.
  • Free axe throwing with Naughty Norse in Front Brents car park. It's family friendly and you don't need to book.
  • Paladins of Chivalry, a living history group, set up a medieval camp with armour, dancing and a foam-sword battle for children.
  • Merryman the Jester and Frodi the Moneyer, who strikes coins the old way.
  • Sandwich Medieval Centre will be there too.
  • Market stalls, crafts, live music and food and drink through the day.

Getting there and parking

Front Brents is across Faversham Creek from the Town Quay (postcode ME13 7DH). From the town centre, walk down Quay Lane to the Town Quay, then cross the bridge over the Creek to reach Front Brents.

Faversham railway station has direct trains from London, Canterbury, Ramsgate and Dover. From the station it's a walk through the town centre to the Creek.

Front Brents car park is being used for the axe throwing on the day, so expect fewer spaces there. The Central Car Park (ME13 8PW) is in the town centre. Swale Council has been consulting on parking charges at Front Brents, so check the signs when you park.

Why Faversham does medieval and Tudor

Faversham has plenty of history from both periods. King Stephen founded Faversham Abbey in 1148 and was buried there. The town was a limb of the Cinque Ports and supplied ships to the Crown. In 1551, Thomas Arden, a former mayor, was murdered in a plot led by his wife. The case became the Elizabethan play Arden of Faversham.

If the day gives you a taste for it, the Faversham Charters have a medieval and Tudor town trail you can walk any time. The Faversham Society also has a talk on Empress Matilda and King Stephen on 8 October.
