Faversham This Week: Road Closures, Abbey Memories and a Packed Events Calendar

24 August 2026 · Faversham.info

From temporary road closures to a nostalgic look back at the town's Roman and medieval past, here's what's been happening in Faversham this week — plus a busy run of events heading into September.

Drivers should note a couple of temporary road closures around town. Kent County Council has made an order to temporarily close Cluny Road to through traffic, so it's worth planning an alternative route if that's part of your usual journey. Over on Westgate Road, a separate temporary order prohibits driving to allow Southern Water Services to carry out gully works. Both are the kind of short-term disruption that's easy to be caught out by, so a moment's forward planning should save some frustration.

There was a lovely bit of local history to enjoy too. The Faversham Society shared Brian Philp's memories of the 1965 excavation of Faversham Abbey and the Roman Villa. Brian, who led the digs, offered entertaining first-hand accounts that revealed just how astonishing the scale of the Abbey once was, during a visit marking the 60th anniversary of the excavation. It's a reminder of how much fascinating heritage lies beneath our feet.

Looking ahead, the week rounds off with plenty to do. The Faversham Society hosts a Creative Writing Session at 12 Preston Street on Tuesday 25 August, while families can enjoy Summer Creative Fun with Marble and String Painting at The Alexander Centre on Thursday 27 August. On Friday 28 August, Macknade Fine Foods presents Friday Night Live with the Decades Showband.

Saturday 29 August is a busy one: the Brogdale Cider Festival takes place at Brogdale Collections, and the Faversham Horticultural Society gathers at The Alexander Centre. Early September brings the town's big draw, with the Faversham Hop Festival 2026 filling the town centre on Saturday 5 September, alongside the Ale Shed and a Hop Festival Craft Fair, both at The Alexander Centre.

There's more still to come as September unfolds. Friday 11 September sees 55 Years at Market Square and Drag Bingo with Delilah Tickles and Anita Wee at the Faversham Assembly Rooms. On Saturday 12 September, head to the Guildhall Wedding Fair and Open Day, or browse Kent's Magical 'Mini' Markets at The Alexander Centre.

Rounding out our look ahead, Open Faversham presents 'From the Source of the Westbrook to the Sea' at St Mary of Charity Church on Wednesday 16 September, The McCartney Tribute Collection plays The Alexander Centre on Friday 18 September, and Brogdale Collections hosts Pear Weekend on Saturday 19 September. Whether you fancy live music, local markets or a celebration of Kent's orchards, there's something for everyone in the weeks ahead.
