Sitting between Faversham and Canterbury, Boughton — properly Boughton under Blean — is one of those Kentish villages that rewards a slower look. Strictly speaking, "Boughton under Blean" names the hamlet at the top of Boughton Hill, while the main village at the foot of the hill is Boughton Street, but most people simply call the whole area Boughton. The "under Blean" part points to its position on the edge of the former Royal hunting forest of Blean, and the surrounding landscape reflects that: a patchwork of woodland, open fields and the gentle undulations of the North Downs foothills, threaded with trails.
The village has deep roots. Boughton under Blean appears in the Domesday Book, with both church and manor once belonging to the Archbishop of Canterbury. For centuries it lay on the main road between London and Canterbury — until the A2 bypass opened in 1976 — and, having climbed Boughton Hill, it is the first place from which the towers of Canterbury Cathedral come into view when travelling from London. That moment even earns a mention in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, in "The Canon's Yeoman's Prologue." Nearby, the Battle of Bossenden Wood in May 1838, involving local labourers and soldiers sent from Canterbury, has been called the last battle on English soil; eleven men died in the brief clash.
At the heart of the parish stands St Peter and St Paul, a 13th-century church overlooking secluded farmland in South Street, with 14th-century chapels and 15th-century aisles and tower, run today as a combined benefice with Hernhill. The village keeps two Shepherd Neame pubs: The Queen's Head at 111 The Street, built in 1590 and known for its real fire, large beer garden and welcome to families and pets, and the White Horse at 246 The Street, a Grade II listed former coaching inn. Mount Ephraim Gardens offers a green space to enjoy, while paths from the village lead into Blean Forest, one of the largest ancient woodlands in England. Walkers are well served here, with routes such as a moderate 5.9-mile loop that links villages and takes in a pub lunch along the way.
The local economy grew from farming — largely arable, with the orchards and hop gardens that are such Kentish staples — and today a good range of independent businesses keep the village and its neighbours ticking over. For everyday practicalities there are garages including Bull Lane Garage and Oak Motors, while trades such as Quadrant Plumbing LTD, M Godden Bespoke Carpentry & Joinery, Rooftech and The Flat Roof Recovery Company cover work around the home. Those planning bigger projects might turn to Roots Kitchens Bedrooms Bathrooms or Ingrain Architecture.
Health and wellbeing are well represented too, from The Limes Physiotherapy Clinic and The Workplace Wellness Co to the Cave Hotel and Golf Resort, with Silver Gate Vets looking after the area's animals. For everyday needs and treats there are shops like Bombus, Cut Once Boardworks, Grain Store Studio and Julian Cousins & Associates, alongside Caroline's Hair & Beauty. Professional services span Blushing Bride Photography, Izzy PR, Shout Design - Kent and Memoria Faversham and Mid Kent Memorial Park and Crematorium. Together they reflect a village that combines a real sense of history and countryside with the practical services of a working Kentish community.
