Teynham (pronounced TEN-əm) sits between Sittingbourne and Faversham, just north of the A2, in the borough of Swale. It's a small village and civil parish with a rural, residential feel, taking in the hamlet of Conyer on an inlet of the River Swale. The southern part of the parish is largely given over to agriculture — corn, hops and the produce of orchards for which the area is well known — while the marshes and waterways to the north draw walkers and birdwatchers.
The village has a long history that belies its quiet character today. Teynham lies on Watling Street, the Roman route from Dover to London. King Kenulf of Mercia gave the place to Christ Church, Canterbury, and it later became a manor of the Archbishop of Canterbury, complete with a palace; Archbishop John de Stratford entertained King Edward III here in 1345. Perhaps most notably, Richard Harrys, fruiterer to Henry VIII, planted 105 acres with cherries and apples brought from Flanders, making Teynham one of the earliest places cherries were grown in Kent and England.
At the heart of the parish stands St Mary's Church, built of flint in a cruciform plan and Grade I listed. Its origins are 12th-century, with 13th-century work and 15th-century windows, and its old door still bears the scars of Civil War skirmishes. Down towards the Swale, Conyer's marina and wharf sit close to the Saxon Shore Way, while nearby Oare Marshes — 81 hectares of grazing marsh and freshwater dykes managed by Kent Wildlife Trust — is a favourite for birding and hiking. A railway station on the London Victoria to Dover line keeps the village well connected.
Everyday life is served by a good mix of local businesses. For food shopping there's the Co-op on London Road, Pernier Mini Market and Moor Organics, alongside butchers including Dr J Meakin, The Cutting Room and LTR Supplies, and R & A Lucky Store for baked goods. When you'd rather eat out or grab a takeaway, options range from Crispin's Fish Bar and Fat Dads Diner to Teynham Chinese, Jo-Eleanor's Bread & Butter and The Electric Daisy Tea Room.
The parish keeps its traditional pubs, too: the Dover Castle Inn, The George Inn and The Swan all serve the community, while The Shepherds Snug offers a place to stay. Motorists are well looked after by a cluster of garages — among them Cookes Car Repairs, Unicorn Automobiles, Vanquish Car Centre, MGP Services and Pearls Tuning — plus Esso and the Teynham hand car wash. Trades and services such as Bangays and M Scott Electrical cover the practical side of village life.
There's plenty here for wellbeing and family life as well. Beauty Belle Kent, LailaBocarro hair & beauty and Creed Outdoor Centre sit alongside community facilities like Teynham Community Hall, Teynham Village Hall, the Community Pre-School and the Scout HQ, while Highly Sprung Trampolining Club and Paws 4 Paradise Pet Sitting add to the mix. Whether you're a resident or just passing through on the way between Sittingbourne and Faversham, Teynham rewards a closer look.
